The Puritans were a large and powerful Protestant group. They were Calvinists (A follower of the teachings of John Calvin, a leader of the Protestant Reformation.) They hated the Roman Catholic Church. Puritans wore dark clothing and disapproved of most fun things. Puritanism spread rapidly though England in the 16th and 17th centuries. Many Puritans were imprisoned for their beliefs.
